ADA Compliant Signs - Signs of Intelligence in Peachtree Corners, GA

As a property or facility manager you must be familiar with the ADA Guidelines for ADA Compliant Signs. You want to make sure that everyone who visits your property feels comfortable, safe and welcome. One way you can provide that inclusive feeling is by using ADA signage. At Signs of Intelligence, located in Peachtree Corners, we have created this simple guide to bring you up to speed with the latest ADA Guidelines in the metro Atlanta area in Georgia.

Americans with Disabilities Act

Before explaining the actual ADA Guidelines, to design ADA Compliant Signs, let’s have a quick look at what ADA stands for. ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was written into legislation back in the 1990s. The Americans with Disabilities Act stipulates how to design ADA signs for public facilities in order to be ADA compliant. It also stipulates where and in which buildings ADA Compliant Signs are required and how to install them up to code, however we will explain this in another post.

ADA Guidelines for ADA Compliant Signs

At Signs of Intelligence we follow the below ADA Guidelines to design ADA Compliant Signs and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act:

Text Size

ADA Compliant Signs must have a minimum text size of 5/8”and a maximum of 2”. Furthermore the text must be raised a minimum of 1/32”, which we refer to as tactile lettering.

Braille

The ADA Guidelines stipulate that ADA Signs must have grade 2 braille, which must be placed under the text copy. The braille should be a direct translation of the sign.

Font

Fonts used to design ADA Signs must be sans serif and cannot be italic, script, bold or decorative in any way. Furthermore all text copy must be in all caps. There is a wide variety of fonts available for ADA Compliant Signs.

Finishing

The finishing of compliant signs must be non-glare, matte of eggshell and reflective or glossy finishes are not allowed. Furthermore, textures must be kept to a minimum as to not affect legibility. Since the signs are intended to be read by touch they cannot have any sharp or abrasive edges.

Contrast

When it comes to the colors of the sign, they must have a contrast ratio of 70 percent between the tactile lettering and the background. Which means that the letters need to stand out with a darker or lighter color from the background.
