Serving their local community for several years now, it was time to up their signage game and that’s where our team from Signs of Intelligence came to the rescue. Continue to read to learn a little more about the new neon sign for Gus’s Fried Chicken and the process of ordering a new building sign.

The Objective
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken contacted Signs of Intelligence to discuss their need for a new exterior neon illuminated building sign. The main objective for their new sign was to create a neon sign that would look like it would have been designed in the old days, when neon signs were the prevalent sign option. The location of the restaurant is a franchise location for a long-established company in Memphis that has an iconic neon sign. The restaurant owners of Gus’s Fried Chicken in Chamblee where looking to have this sign redesigned but historically accurate.
Sign Type
In order to stand out at night and enhance visibility from different directions, Gus’s Fried Chicken decided on an illuminated building sign, placed on the corner of the building. The choice of a neon sign, opposed to LED, was made in order to honor the franchise’s tradition and it’s history. At Signs of Intelligence we have an in-house team of Graphic Designers and this project provided us with a nice design challenge. Although it wasn’t easy, we had fun converting the iconic logo into the neon tube design. In terms of color, we decided together on classic neon colors that really ‘pop’ and make the restaurant stand out during the day and at night.

The process
The overall duration of this sign project took about 8 weeks, which is an average time line for this type of sign, including special permitting. We have broken down the different steps in the process and highlighted what’s involved in each step.
1. Permit
After the sign design is approved by the customer it’s time to apply for the sign permit, which is totally in the hands of Signs of Intelligence so you can continue to run your business. This particular project was rather challenging, considering that neon signs were not allowed by the current city ordinance. Many hours of due diligence, attendance of a city council meeting and presentation of the project with photos, design proofs and specifications led to a favorable vote from the city council and approval on the much wanted sign for our client.
2. Fabrication
Upon receipt of the sign permit it is time to proceed with the fabrication of the sign. The production of a neon sign is a very intricate process, as it involves bending glass tubes to the exact shape of the sign design (in this case a chicken). The bent tubes were then filled with a combination of gasses, producing the bright red and yellow colors of the sign. After the sign was fabricated, an electrical current was passed through the gas tubes and voila! The tubes emit a wonderful glowing light, ready for installation.
3. Installation
During the installation process we carefully consider our customers business, as not to interfere with their business operation. Although the actual installation of the sign only encompasses a few hours, the entire installation process involved several days due to the challenging location of the sign. At Signs of Intelligence safety comes first and therefore we only work with the best materials. Furthermore, we have a qualified team of installers for the best end result of your sign installation.
